Zachary Alan.

A few weeks ago I woke up to a call from my dad. He gently told me that my brother, Zac, had broken his back and he couldn't feel much below his waist. My heart sunk.

Zac had been off traveling the country on his bike since Christmas. He was in North Carolina when the accident happened. He wasn't with anyone we knew, his phone was dead, and we couldn't get ahold of him at the hospital. Thankfully we have family down there and they drove in to the hospital so we could find out what was going on. It was a lot of anxious hours of waiting for phone calls to update us on what was happening. I finally got to talk to him for a couple minutes that evening. It was comforting to hear his voice and know he was alive but hearing how scared he was and how much pain he was is was horrible. And we were so far away.

He had surgery the next day. They had to remove bits of his shattered vertebrae from around his spinal cord and put in some "hardware" and fuse the surrounding vertebrae to whatever plate/implant they put in. They closed up the 10" incision with 30 staples. He was so out of it for the days following the surgery that it was hard to know how exactly he was doing. They let us know that they had him up walking though - which was incredible! After a painfully long week of feeling nauseous every time the phone would ring, my dad drove down to pick up Zac. He took him to Florida to stay with my grandparents while he recovers and a few days later I drove down with some friends to Florida to see him and help out with my grandma (who had also just had surgery) and him.
He could have been dead or paralyzed but instead we spent the week chatting and laughing while he laid in his bed trying to heal. We were even able to go out for a walk each afternoon! I was overwhelmed with thankfulness.

They found another fractured vertebrae and he still has not regained all of the feeling that he lost, so he has a lot of recovering to do and could use prayers. But I cannot even express the amount of praise that God deserves in his healing already. I just pray that this sweet brother of mine will know that God saved him because he has other plans for his life. Incredible ones.

Thanks for listening to this story from a sister that is so happy to have an older brother that is walking and smiling. And for a Savior that holds us so dear.
